Below is a list of frequently asked questions about the health and wellness topics that we focus on at Calm Hippo.
How do you deal with a numb leg while meditating?
Believe it or not, meditation does not have to be something that you do cross-legged on the floor. This position is uncomfortable for most people. If you can relate to this problem then I would recommend finding a comfortable mediation chair. If you want to make the cross-legged method work then I would recommend using a meditation cushion. When you meditate, sit on the edge of the cushion and allow you legs to angle downward in front of you. This should reduce numbness and help you develop a meditation position that is good for your health.

What is mindful eating?
Mindful eating is a frequented topic of discussion in the health world. It is basically just paying attention to what you are eating. Instead of watching t.v. while you eat dinner, try reducing distraction. Focus on the flavor, texture, smell, and sound of the food. Though studies are limited, proponents of mindful eating claim that it can change your relationship with food. Ultimately, they argue that mindful eating can help with appetite management and weight loss. See the video below for more information.
Additionally, the term “mindful eating” is also sometimes used to describe a conscious approach to shopping for food. More specifically, a mindful shopper will buy products based on how they were produced. This way, their purchases align with their ethical values.
Why is my mind racing?
The mind races when we lose control of our relationship with thoughts. Your mind is a powerful tool. It has the power to understand, question, feel, and reflect. We use our minds on a daily basis to do these things through various forms of thinking. Most of us use our mind for thinking too much and we don’t allow it to heal. You can think of the mind like a muscle. Like any other muscle; if you go to the gym and work the same muscle until failure day after day, you will end up doing damage. This is because the muscle needs time to heal. When the mind races, it is telling you that you need a break from thinking. The mind heals by distancing itself from thoughts. If you want to stop your mind from racing then you must take some time to close your eyes and watch the thoughts racing around. This is called meditation.
Is Multitasking Bad For Your Health?
The short answer is, yes. Multitasking is bad for your health, your productivity, and your overall mental well-being. Technically, multitasking is when you try to perform two tasks simultaneously. Unfortunately, our brains are not wired to do this and we end up rapidly switching between the two tasks we are trying to complete. Studies have shown that your brain performs much better when it has time to focus its full attention on one thing. Further, multitasking can increase cortisol levels in your body and, ultimately, stress you out! Try focusing on one thing at a time.
How Long Should You Stay in a Sauna?
Sitting in a sauna for the proper amount of time can be beneficial to your health. However, sit in a sauna for too long and you could experience dehydration, overheating, and other health complications. The recommended limit for one sauna session is 20 minutes. Try to stay at or below this time frame.
Is a Vegan Diet Healthy?
It depends on what you choose to eat as a vegan. With any vegan diet you must cut out animal products. Animal products have been linked to heart disease and many other common problems. Therefore, cutting these out have been shown to have fast-acting positive health effects. However, just becoming a vegan will not have a positive effect if you choose to replace meat with other unhealthy foods such as refined carbs, processed junk, and saturated fats. If you choose to replace meat with whole vegetables, grains, and legumes then, yes, a vegan diet can be healthy.
